Situated in Northfield township, the original hunting grounds for the Potawatomi Indians, Northbrook was settled by German immigrants and incorporated in 1901 as Shermerville. Residents in the early 20's wished to create a new image for their town and in 1922 sponsored a contest to select a new name. Northbrook was chosen because the middle forks of the north branch of the Chicago River bisected the town. Shermerville was officially changed to Northbrook in 1923. The suburb of Northbrook is surrounded by over a dozen golf and country clubs and the beautiful Skokie Lagoons and Botanic Gardens form a part of its eastern boundary.
