The Village of Glencoe is a residential lakefront community which was incorporated in 1869, and in 1914 became the first community in Illinois to adopt the council-manager form of government. In 1921, the Village of Glencoe became one of the first communities in Illinois to adopt a zoning ordinance, and is still considered a model community in terms of land use and zoning control. Glencoe was also the first community in Illinois to cross-train officers in both police and fire fighting duties. The Village of Glencoe has many historical and architecturally significant structures and is the home of the only known bridge to be designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
